Punjab Kings - Season-wise Performance in IPL:
Punjab Kings have been one of the least successful teams in the IPL history. Their journey began on a promising note though. In 2008 under the captaincy of Yuvraj Singh, Punjab Kings qualified for the semifinals.
However, they could not progress ahead of the league stage for the following five seasons. In 2014, they appointed Australia's George Bailey as their captain and the decision paid off. Punjab Kings not only ended their 5-year wait for a place in the playoffs but also qualified for the final for the first time.
However, they could not win the title-decider against Kolkata Knight Riders. Punjab Kings failed to build on that successful season and have not been able to make it ahead of the league stage since then. From 2015 to 2024, they have exited the tournament at the league stage for 10 years in a row.
During this disappointing phase, their best result came in 2017 when they finished at the fifth spot when the IPL was still an 8-team competition. After years of failure, Punjab Kings roped in IPL-winning captain Shreyas Iyer and named him as their captain for the 2025 season. They also appointed Australia's legendary batsman Ricky Ponting as their head coach.
